A few days ago we started a simple experiment. Posting an image like this one:<\/p>\n\n\n

… comparing AI-haters or AI enemies to the survivors in the movie The Omega Man (Charlton Heston, 1973), who hate everything that smells of technology after a pandemic and its aftermath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Movie aside, very much in line with the catastrophic themes of the 70s and 80s (earthquakes, burning skyscrapers, etc.), the experiment attempted (and still attempts) to polarize the opinion of those who embrace AI for any reason and those who hate it just as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We understand that there is a spectrum between using technology just because and hating it for the same reason. Not everything is black or white. Hence the phrase “the problem is the people,” just as in anti-weapon campaigns, it is said that the problem is not the bullet, nor even the weapon, but the hand that wields it. The same applies to AI. Used well, it will bring us benefits in the short term. Misused, it will be a disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Where are the shades of gray? In regulation and self-control, to start with. Not everything has to have AI to be useful. A toaster is still a toaster. Its purpose is to toast bread without burning it. For that, a timer and perhaps a thermostat are enough, not an AI deciding the exact second to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The biggest criticism of all AI, especially generative ones in image and sound, is plagiarism. Everything produced with AI is a plagiarism of hundreds of billions of previous works, made by humans (or not!) and therefore is plagiarism. This is where misinformation prevails. It’s not about plagiarism or collages of previous works, but since the technical explanation is very complex, let’s look at it from another perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Training an AI, whether a language model or a graphic model, is the real problem. The corporations and companies behind AIs use what they consider is at hand. This means using images, videos, audio, and texts that exist on the web. The internet has become a great provider of data to feed AIs. There lies the big mistake. It was a legal mistake. Before using a single pixel, a single bit of existing information on the web, permission should at least be asked from its author or legal owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no excuse for not using content published on the internet as public use. The Public Domain and various types of Copyleft have existed for decades. It happens to be much easier and faster to launch a spider over the web and suck up everything that exists. It’s like trawling the sea. We take everything, whether it’s good or bad, whether it has an owner or not. That is the big problem with AIs, not their use, not their results. The problem is their origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Solving it isn’t very easy. Is it possible to re-train all existing AIs? At what cost? And will we like and be satisfied with the final result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s like wanting a Matrix Reloaded. We reload everything and forget about the legal problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is another possible solution. Exactly. Money. A fee for artists, writers, musicians, etc., that covers this illegal use of their authorship and compensates, if possible, the effects AI may have on their work. This has been done before. Who doesn’t remember the levy on CDs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, there are other legal aspects to consider. Privacy, fraudulent use, illegal use, etc. A host of problems inherent in a new technology that we do not know where it may lead. Some pessimists say it could lead to the end of the world. As long as human stupidity exists, we don’t need AI to end life on Earth. A couple of buttons pressed at the wrong time and there you have it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Until then, at Pixed Magazine, we continue exploring new ways to create digital art using AI and standard digital tools. There is a whole world to discover and experiment with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
